IPL 2022: Aakash Chopra predicts another failure for CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad

Former Indian batsman Akash Chopra believes Chennai’s Super Kings (CSK) fly-half Ruturaj Gaikwad’s dry run with the bat in IPL 2022 is set to continue against Gujarat Titans (GT).

CSK will face GT in the second match of Sunday’s (April 17) IPL 2022 double header at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune.

Previewing the contest on his YouTube channel, Chopra said struggling Chennai fly-half Gaikwad could be in for another tough game against a high-quality bowling team from Gujarat. He issued the following opinion:

“It’s been five games and Ruturaj hasn’t scored too many points yet. I honestly don’t see him scoring against GT either. On such a surface against a quality bowling attack, if your confidence is down , the chances of scoring get very slim. It’s a big problem. Meanwhile, Robin Uthappa has to beat the same way he did in the last game against Bangalore.

Gaikwad, 25, has scored just 35 points in five IPL 2022 games with an average of a paltry seven and a strike rate of 85.37. His opening partner Uthappa hammered 194 points in five games at a 163.03 strike rate. In the last match against RCB, the former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) star recorded his best IPL score of 88.

“I expect him to shoot and do a little more” – Aakash Chopra on versatile CSK Moeen Ali

Apart from Gaikwad’s dismal run with the bat, Moeen Ali’s inconsistency at No. 3 is also hurting Chennai. The 34-year-old has recorded scores of 35, 0, 48 and three in the four matches he has played so far this season.

According to Chopra, the English all-rounder needs to do much better, given his experience and talent. The 44-year-old said:

“Moeen Ali started this season well, but he’s been down since. In between, he got a few runs in one inning, but he also hit pretty slow in this game. I expect him to shoot and do a little more.

The former cricketer has backed the decision to promote the in-form Shivam Dube in order. Sharing his view on the same, he said:

“Shivam Dube is promoted to the batting order. It’s a good thing to do because he’s been in great shape. As a result, Rayudu was demoted and his role reduced. But they might need him against GT if the wickets fall in the middle.

Coming in at No. 4, Dube scored an undefeated 95 on 46 balls against RCB. He featured in a third-wicket stand of 165 with Uthappa as CSK recorded their first victory of the IPL 2022.
