Aakash Chopra has pointed out that Kane Williamson’s indifferent form is a huge concern for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2022.
Williamson had just four carries on 11 deliveries in Thursday’s (May 5) encounter against the Delhi Capitals (DC). Although Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran played fighting shots for SRH, they lost the match by 21 points while chasing a target of 208 points.
While reflecting on the Sunrisers Hyderabad chase in a video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra highlighted Williamson’s disappointing returns in IPL 2022 so far. He explained:
“Abhishek Sharma came out early but what about Kane Williamson? He’s not consistent Williamson, he looks like a slightly confused Williamson. He’s got a sub-100 strike rate this year, he scored 200 points in 10 games and got in that game as well, scored five points on 11 balls. He was struggling and how. That’s a huge concern.
The former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) player believes Sunrisers Hyderabad should beat Rahul Tripathi or Aiden Markram at the top of the order instead of Williamson. Chopra reasoned:
“Your two openers are coming out, you’re going to five runs per over, how will that work, you’re chasing 200, you have to start a little fast. I feel open with Rahul Tripathi or sending Aiden Markram in order because ‘they’re in better shape.’
Williamson has totaled 199 carries at a below average 22.11 in IPL 2022 so far. More than his Willow’s lack of runs, his 96.13 strike rate atop the command has been a bigger concern for the franchise.
“Markram and Pooran had a partnership and both played very well” – Aakash Chopra on Sunrisers Hyderabad’s other hitters
However, Aakash Chopra praised Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran for keeping Sunrisers Hyderabad in the game. He observed:
“Rahul Tripathi played some big shots in the sixth, he was trying but the poor guy came out at Mitchell Marsh. Markram and Pooran had a partnership and the two played really well.”
The famous commentator concluded by observing that the lack of striking depth has also jeopardized the Sunrisers’ pursuit in Hyderabad. Chopra clarified:
“But when Aiden Markram came out I felt it was over. Shashank came over but who’s there in the stick after him? exposed. Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran are playing great but Kane Williamson’s bat isn’t firing at all.”
The absence of Washington Sundar due to injury has had a negative impact on Sunrisers Hyderabad’s shooting depth. Their decision to play Sean Abbott ahead of Marco Jansen hurt them even more in that department.
