iPhone 16 — 7 biggest rumored upgrades
All eyes will be on Apple this fall, when the iPhone 16 is expected to launch. We’re still months away from that happening, but the numerous leaks we’ve seen so far give us an idea of what to expect with this year’s standard models – giving more reason to convince people to upgrade.
While the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are expected to receive their share of upgrades, those who aren’t willing to shell out more money on an iPhone might be attracted to what the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus could offer. The juiciest rumors hint at new display technology, a Capture button and a special video capture mode. Even more amazing might be the generative AI features, which we could get a glimpse of when iOS 18 is expected to be shown off at Apple’s WWDC 2024 developer conference in June.
It all adds up to a strong argument, so here are all the biggest upgrades that have us excited for the iPhone 16.
Support for spatial video recording
Apple’s Vision Pro is undeniably transforming computing, but one aspect users now love is the ability to record and watch spatial videos with the headset. While their recording was exclusive to the Vision Pro, Apple ended up expanding support for spatial video recording to the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max – due to the layout of their cameras.
The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are also expected to support spatial video recording due to the way Apple positions its rear cameras. Specifically, it goes from the diagonal layout we get in the current iPhone 15 to a vertical layout that stacks the 48 MP main camera and the 12 MP ultra-wide on top of each other.
This would effectively allow the iPhone 16 to record spatial video, which could then be viewed on an Apple Vision Pro for that immersive experience that makes you feel like you’re there in the video.
Thinner bezel, brighter screen
Rumors surrounding the iPhone 16 display run the gamut, with one report hinting that the same 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes will be present with the new iPhones, as well as the same refresh rate of 60 Hz than before. There is now no cause for alarm, as the bezels around the displays are believed to be thinner, provided Apple’s manufacturing partners can produce on time and to Apple’s standards.
Still, the iPhone 16’s biggest screen-related upgrade focuses on how they could use the new OLED material provided by Samsung, effectively improving its power efficiency. Another possibility is that Apple could switch to a MicroLED display for its iPhone 16 devices, which would inherently amplify the screen’s brightness and color, while consuming less power. This would be an added treat as the iPhone 15 already has one of the brightest screens of its size, reaching a respectable peak brightness of 1,401 nits.
New Capture button
Apple usually reserves a few features exclusive to its Pro models, but it seems that a Capture button will also appear alongside the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. Although we don’t yet know if the Action button will be present on standard models, the Capture button would make it easier to launch the camera and take photos.
Of course, Apple is going to make it different from the old camera buttons found in other phones. First, it would be placed under the power button and offer haptic feedback as it uses a solid-state capacitive design. Essentially, the Capture button could distinguish the amount of pressure applied to it – meaning it could even be used to adjust focus, much like how the Shutter button is designed with some of the best mirrorless cameras.
A18 chip instead of A17
Apple could do something completely different from previous iPhone launches by adopting the same chip in all iPhone 16 models. In the past, Apple had a tradition of running an older chipset for its standard models, while by reserving a new one for its Pro iPhones.
While it’s still possible that the iPhone 16 will inherit the A17 Pro chip launched with the iPhone 15 Pro models, another rumor suggests that all four iPhone 16 models will run on 3-nanometer A18 chips. As expected, however, the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max would get a slightly more powerful version. Still, the A18 chip could mean bigger performance gains for standard models, which will likely support AI-powered software features.
Generative AI
AI has been all the rage in recent months, as many phone makers are rolling out more and more new features. Apple is poised to enter the arena with AI features that could come with iOS 18, whether they’re more focused on Siri or touch on other aspects of the experience.
Generative AI could take the form of a feature called “Siri Summarization,” which could link Apple’s voice assistant to the ChatGPT API. This would give Siri additional intelligence to perform summaries and respond to more complex requests.
Beyond Siri, generative AI features could also touch on other areas, such as AI tools for developers, as well as Apple Music playlist generation. On the photos and videos side, it has been reported that Apple is working on developing an AI model that would allow photo edits to be performed based on a user’s instructions. There aren’t many details yet on exactly what editing functions it would be able to do, but it should at least rival what Google and Samsung offer with their flagship phones.
256 GB of starting storage
Call it a well-deserved upgrade, but it looks like we could get 256GB base models for the iPhone 16. That would be double the amount of starting storage currently available with the iPhone 15. This news Generous starting storage capacity would also be accompanied by 8 GB of RAM.
Since the iPhone 16 will reportedly support spatial video recording, this upgrade makes the devices better equipped to store all those files. This would be a giant step and could set a new standard for all other flagship releases for the rest of the year.
Wi-Fi 6th
While the iPhone 15 Pro models enjoyed faster speeds thanks to Wi-Fi 6e, the iPhone 15 had to make do with Wi-Fi 6. However, leaks indicate that the iPhone 16 will adopt Wi-Fi 6th in its arsenal, which gives it access to the 6GHz band. For the average user, this simply means faster speeds and reduced interference from competing Wi-Fi devices.
