Romain Grosjean will be in action in Detroit this weekend

Following May’s drama, which culminated in a heartwarming fourth Indianapolis 500 win for Helio Castroneves, the IndyCar season heads to Detroit for a key weekend in two ways.

Races Seven and Eight of an extremely competitive campaign see cars returning to the streets of Belle Isle for the first time since 2019 for qualifying and racing on Saturday and Sunday, live on Sky Sports F1.

The temporary 2.35-mile track had staged a double header every year since 2012 before the Covid-19 pandemic forced last year’s race to be canceled, but Detroit returns for 2021 with a peloton of 25 pilots.

The entry list includes Romain Grosjean, back in action for the last road event after taking pole position and finishing second in his previous appearance at the Indy GP.

Grosjean had initially registered to compete in the road / street events only during his rookie season, but, after watching the Indy 500 at home in Switzerland, he will now compete for the first time on an oval in the World Wide Technology Raceway event in August.

“The first step is weird being home watching it and not being a part of it knowing your friends are doing it,” Grosjean told the Associated Press about the Indy 500.

“So we’ll see what the situation is and then from a family perspective what we think we do. Initially I said I didn’t want to make ovals, now I would like to try one and see then if I want to do more. “

Helio Castroneves won his fourth Indianapolis 500 after passing Alex Palou in the closing laps of a thrilling 200-lap race

There have been six different winners in the first six rounds of the season and Chip Ganassi’s Alex Palou leads the standings over defending champion Scott Dixon after finishing second behind Castroneves at the Brickyard.

But Palou carries a six-place grid penalty in Detroit after an engine change over the Indy weekend.

Arrow McLaren SP’s Pato O’Ward is third in the standings after a strong start to the team’s second campaign, 37 points behind Palou.
