Indoor volleyball adds seven for 2022-23

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW Volleyball Head Coach Dottie Hampton announced the addition of Caitlyn Callahan, Hannah Forbes, Noah Gaeta, Morgan Galligan, Emilie Hanlon, Lilly Kirtley-Peyton and Sarah Thompson in the indoor program for the 2022 season.

“We’re really excited for this new class,” Hampton said. “The mix of youth and experience will complement our team well. We have depth in every position and we will be able to easily diversify our attack. Each player has gifts and talents that already blend with what we already have on our team. roster and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish this season.”
Callahan, Galligan and Hanlon will join the program as transfers while Forbes, Gaeta, Kirtley-Peyton and Thompson will be freshmen.

Callahan was a highly decorated middle hitter in her first redshirt season at NCAA Division II Millersville. Callahan was honored as a D2CCA All-Atlantic Region winner while earning All-PSAC First Team honors and was named PSAC East Rookie of the Year. Callahan led PSAC with 52 solo blocks and was second in total blocks with 129. Offensively, Callahan had 314 kills in 117 sets played.

Galligan joins the UNCW program after two seasons at Hartford as a setter. In two seasons with the Hawks, Galligan appeared in 19 games spanning 64 sets. As a freshman in the spring of 2021, she logged 15 digs in a limited schedule. In her sophomore year, she transitioned to full-time setter and averaged 7.94 assists per set while averaging 1.5 digs per set. She dished out a career-high 51 assists in a five-set victory over Quinnipiac.

Hanlon attended Butte College and averaged .297 kills per set and started 23 of 24 games for the Roadrunners. She attended Chico High School in Chico, California where she started two seasons in college. Hanlon was an all-conference selection his senior season for the Panthers.

Forbes is a product of the state of Pittsboro, North Carolina. She performed for Northwood High School where she was an all-state and all-conference performer her senior season. As a senior, Forbes totaled 507 kills and 360 digs as the Chargers reached the fourth round of the North Carolina State 3A tournament, the farthest the program had reached.

Gaeta is another state product, having played for West Rowan High School in the North Piedmont Conference at the 3A level. Gaeta was a three-year starter for the Falcons at the passer and was honored all state, region and conference. During his senior season with the Falcons, Gaeta had 923 assists and 235 digs. His 1,747 career assists were a program record.

Kirtley-Peyton is a libero who played for Alabama Performance, a club from Birmingham, Ala. She was named to the 2019-22 Ultra Ankle/JVA Watch List and the 2020-22 AVCA Under Armor Phenom List.

Thompson rounds out the 2022 newcomers and is an outside hitter from Virginia Beach, Va. His older sister, Ashley, plays for both the indoor and beach volleyball programs at UNCW. Thompson started all four seasons with the Knights of Kellam High School and was a first-team All-State selection. During her senior season, she led the team with an average of 3.5 kills and set program records with an average of .350 and 4.1 digs per set. The Knights qualified for the 6A Finals in 2021.
