Indian Airlines faced 546 technical issues during flight operations in 2022

The Direction Générale de l’Aviation Civile (DGAC) ensures that the airline and the maintenance organization continue to comply with the regulatory requirements for which they were initially approved through a system of monitoring, audits, spot checks and night surveillance.

The government said on Thursday that national airlines had faced a total of 546 technical problems while operating planes last year.

Among them, the country’s largest airline, IndiGo, faced 215 problems, while SpiceJet saw 143 and Vistara, 97.

Air India faced 64 hitches while those reported by Go First and Akasa Air stood at 7 and 6 respectively, according to data provided by the Civil Aviation Ministry in a written response to the Lok Sabha.

In 2022, Air Asia (India) had 8 hitches, Alliance Air reported 3 hitches, Fly Big (1), TrueJet (1) and BlueDart Aviation (1).

A total of 1,090 problems have been experienced by airlines over the past two years.

Last year, the number of snags was slightly higher at 546 compared to 544 in 2021.

Asked whether more technical problems are being reported in the country due to low-cost airlines, State Minister for Civil Aviation VK Singh replied in the negative.

“No Sir, technical problems are encountered during the operation of the aircraft. These may be due to improper operation/malfunctions of the systems/equipment/components installed on the aircraft,” he said.

The Minister also noted that some of the technical issues may require the flight crew to take actions such as turning around, aborting takeoff or circling with the safety of operations in mind and are generally taken to avoid serious incidents/accidents.

“Operators are taking action to rectify technical issues based on advice provided by the manufacturer before continuing to operate the aircraft,” he added.

The Direction Générale de l’Aviation Civile (DGAC) ensures that the airline and the maintenance organization continue to comply with the regulatory requirements for which they were initially approved through a system of monitoring, audits, spot checks and night surveillance.

“In the event of non-compliance, the DGCA ensures that the rectification is carried out by the airlines/maintenance organisation. The DGCA takes enforcement action against the organisation/staff if violations are found , which may include a warning, suspension and cancellation in addition to the imposition of a financial penalty,” Singh said.
