India is at a stage of the T20s where no one will blame the team management for the experimentation. This is where sticking to the same combination becomes a problem for the Dravid-Pandya duo. Dravid has already paid the price for stiffness in the T20 selection before and during the T20 WC. Therefore, Shubman Gill is a question for India to answer.
Shubman Gill or Prithvi Shaw? – Hardik Pandya made it clear that Shubman Gill will get the nod in front of Shaw and the Mumbaikar will have to wait in the wings. But for how long ? India faced a similar problem with KL Rahul, whose below-average T20 strike rate threatened the Indian T20 model. With him out of the T20 squad, India have a similar problem to KL Rahul even in his absence.
Shubman’s numbers in the T20s are no better than KL Rahul’s. Both suffered from a slow approach on the power play. But unlike Rahul, Shubman has yet to make that opening slot his own.

Shubman vs. Prithvi:
- Gill has one of the worst power-play strike rates in the T20s at 119.92.
- In his four innings in T20I so far, Gill has three single digit scores and a 46 at a strike rate of 127.77.
- While Gill is in excellent ODI form, Team India cannot make the repeated mistake of identifying ODI talent for the T20s.
- It didn’t work last time and India needs to fix it while there is time.
- Shaw’s return to the fold is what India would have wanted to revitalize the power play score.
- Shaw has a staggering score of 152.34, the best in Team India, even ahead of Suryakumar Yadav.
Arshdeep Singh or Mukesh Kumar? – The other dilemma concerns Arshdeep Singh. Even though he is India’s top performing T20 bowler in recent times, he is also the worst performing bowler. Since the 2022 T20 World Cup, it has distributed runs at an economic rate of 11.10.
The left arm tailor struggled with his no-balls. On Friday, he conceded 27 runs in an over and made 51 runs in his 4. Bowling coach Paras Mhambrey needs to sit down with him and discuss where he is faltering. Arshdeep is already the bowler with the most no-balls in T20 cricket and he added another to his tally on Friday.
To turn things around for Team India, Dravid can try his luck with Mukesh Kumar, who has excelled in domestic cricket. Until Deepak Chahar is fit again, the likes of Mukesh Kumar could revamp the bowling attack.
For a temporary solution, India can play both Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in place of Arshdeep. With Lucknow’s ground also conducive to spin, India may want to go for an extra spinner.

With Jitesh Sharma also waiting in the wings, he has to deliver.
