IND vs ENG 2022: Wasim Jaffer on Virat Kohli skipping West Indies tour

Wasim Jaffer isn’t sure how a break from the West Indies tour would help out-of-form hitter Virat Kohli. According to Jaffer, keeping in touch with the game could have been more beneficial for the former India skipper.

Kohli was not part of the Indian squad announced earlier for the three-game ODI series in the West Indies. His name was not on the announced T20I squad for the five-match Caribbean series on Thursday.

The 33-year-old’s poor run with the willow continued as he was dismissed for 16 in the second ODI against England at Lord’s. Admitting the pressure continues to mount on the former captain, Jaffer told ESPNcricinfo:

“Each round is going to build up pressure on him and probably make him doubt as well. People keep reminding him of that. I’m sure it suits him. If he had played those T20s, he would have been in touch. I don’t know if this break will help him. The next rounds will be very crucial for him.

Rohit was asked again about Virat. And I’m glad he said what he said. Good to see the captain supporting his best man. https://t.co/OBtd4JHOFE

Former England left-arm spinner Ashley Giles shared a contrasting view. Considering the tight schedule and Kohli’s form, Giles believes the Indian management made the right decision. He issued the following opinion:

“He’s clearly in trouble right now. He’s taking a break from this West Indies series and I think it’s the right thing to do. The schedules currently are pretty crazy for most teams in the world, especially for India, England. It’s good management. Rahul Dravid is a brilliant person and you have to take care of your best players.

Kohli recorded scores of 11, 20, one, 11 and 16 in all three formats during the current England tour.

‘I have to accept IPL being part of the schedule’ – Giles on Kohli not resting for T20 league

While discussing Kohli’s rest, Giles admitted that questions would be asked as to why the cricketer didn’t take a break during IPL 2022.

Responding to the question, the former cricketer said it was time to accept the reality of the situation. Giles explained:

“The argument is going to come up about the IPL, but we have to accept that the IPL is part of the schedule and you never know when one of these players needs a break. is Kohli who needs a break and you want him to shoot, fresh and ready to go when this World Cup comes around. I think it’s the right decision. Get him out of there and rest him.

Kohli also had a poor 2022 IPL campaign, scoring 341 points in 16 games averaging 22.73. He scored three gold ducks during the edition.
