IND versus WI | Don’t think Virat Kohli is going through a lean phase, says Vikram Rathour

Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour is of the opinion that Virat Kohli is not going through a lean phase ahead of the T20I series against West Indies starting February 16. Kohli had a poor run in the recent series against West Indies scoring 26 points averaging 8.6 in three ODI games.

India inflicted a clean sweep on the West Indies in a recently concluded three-game ODI series. The middle order performed well for the series team and the bowlers also provided wickets at crucial stages. However, the form of the former Indian captain Virat Kohli was a concern for the team. It was one of the rare occasions in Kohli’s career where he couldn’t break the 50-point mark in any of the matches.

Kohli scored 26 points at a mediocre 8.6 average in the series. Team batting coach Vikram Rathour believes Kohli is not going through a lean phase.

“I don’t think he goes through a welding phase. I understand he had a bad streak against West Indies (in ODI) but no conversation as such,” Rathour said in a media interaction.

The right-hander has been waiting a century since 2019 when he hit a ton against the West Indies. He has scored several fifty since then, but has been unable to convert them into big scores. Since last year, Kohli has scored 271 runs from nine ODIs. Rathour revealed that Kohli was doing well in the nets.

“He hits the net very well and the kind of preparation he puts in place. We’re waiting…I’m sure in one of these innings he’ll be back in the runs,” the batting coach said.

Rathour also added that the upcoming T20I series will be preparation for the World Cup in Australia scheduled for this year.

“With the stick we have, I don’t think we have any problems. All of our hitters are capable of hitting well in these conditions,” he said.

“Of course that’s the focus at the moment. We’re working for the World Cup in Australia…unfortunately we’re struggling a bit with injuries at the moment, not many people are missing.

“Until we have everyone available, it’s hard to be sure what their role will be. But so far, that’s the goal. We have started our preparation for Australia.
