India captain Rohit Sharma said the team wanted to address weak spots in the squad while advancing after winning the three-game T20I series against Sri Lanka, inflicting a clean sweep. India won the third and final T20I by six wickets thanks to half a century from Shreyas Iyer.
India won the third and final T20I of the series against Sri Lanka, completing a blank on the visitors. The team dominated Sri Lanka throughout the series and won the series with ease. India faced intermediate problems due to the lack of an aggressive approach. But Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer performed brilliantly in the series against West Indies and Sri Lanka.
Suryakumar was the team’s top scorer in the recent West Indies series, scoring 107 points in 3 games averaging 53.50. Shreyas scored 204 points in three matches against Sri Lanka. Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul will return to the squad once they are fit and Rohit Sharma may have to make some tough choices in the squad selection. Rohit said the team wanted to fill their gaps and it would be difficult to pick a player from the in-form players.
“Important to tell the guys not to worry about your positions in the squad. We want to fill in all the gaps we have. Keeping that in mind, we want to move forward. It’s going to be a big challenging but always nice to have fit guys (who to pick).Once we reach Mohali we will start thinking about testing,” Rohit said during the post-match presentation.
Sanju Samson also had an opportunity on the show with youngsters like Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan and Ravi Bishnoi. The team will now prepare for the two-game test series against Sri Lanka and the Indian players will feature in the IPL after that. Reflecting on the series win, Rohit opined that a lot of positives came from winning the series.
“He’s a model of everything that comes together. We played very well. A lot of positives came out of the series. Want to figure out what kind of bench strength we have. It’s good to give these guys opportunities,” he said.
Shreyas Iyer was in sublime form on the show. He recorded scores of 57*, 74*, 73* and was named Man of the Series for his performance. Iyer revealed that his shot in the second T20I was the most special for him because he batted it at a crucial point in the innings.
“All three shots were special, but yesterday’s one – coming at a crucial moment, I would pick that one. Only require one ball to get in shape as long as you keep your eyes on the ball and you play it on its merits. The wicket was small two paced today compared to yesterday. Was playing on merit. The outfield is so fast, just had to fill the gaps. I was a roller coaster trip after my injury. The real test of you is during rehab sessions,” Shreyas said.
