In Lisbon, hospitals overwhelmed by Covid-19 patients

Portugal, yet so far relatively spared by the Covid-19 pandemic, is now the most affected country in the world. The total death toll since the start of the pandemic has thus risen to 11,886 dead, including more than 3,000 in the past two weeks, while the country has been subjected since January 15 to a second general containment. Hospitals are saturated. The pressure on Portugal’s dilapidated health system is such that the Minister of Health is considering appealing for European aid. Report from our special correspondent in Lisbon Anaïs Guérard.
