“I’m going to get through this so I don’t have to go to Manchester”

Frenkie de Jong suspends deal to move to Manchester United as he has no interest in leaving Barcelona.

United devoted much of the transfer window to luring the Dutchman into a move and, despite agreeing a fee with the Catalan giants, De Jong’s reluctance to leave Barcelona is hampering the deal.

Reports have suggested the deal stall was partly because the former Ajax midfielder owed Barca around £17million due to bonuses and deferred wages due to the pandemic of COVID-19.

But talkSPORT have been told by Spanish football expert Phil Kitromilides that the money in circulation is not the issue.

“Frenkie de Jong doesn’t want to leave Barcelona and he doesn’t want to join Manchester United,” Kitromilides said.

“Barcelona absolutely want him to leave, Manchester United are keen for him to sign but Frenkie de Jong doesn’t want to leave.

“He’s been pretty clear about that, so that’s what’s holding up the deal, not necessarily that deferred pay that they’ll find a way around.

“What’s holding up the deal is that Frenkie de Jong doesn’t want to go.”

It is understood Barcelona boss Xavi could look to replace the Dutchman with Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva, who has three years left on his current contract at the Etihad Stadium.

The Portuguese playmaker is said to be open to a move to Camp Nou but any Blaugrana approach would depend on the club reclaiming a fee for De Jong.

But with De Jong’s deal potentially hitting a new snag, it’s unclear which direction United’s long-running pursuit will go and, when asked how the saga could play out, Kitromilides hinted that De Jong could choose to dig in their heels to avoid being shipped to Manchester.

He said: “It’s interesting, a lot of people are suggesting he won’t go. I’ve spoken to people who are in Barcelona who are close to the camp and they suggest he wants to stay.

“He’s very happy in Barcelona, he just bought a new house and he got married there, he doesn’t want to leave Barcelona so there’s no way they can force him to go. .

“They can say ‘you’re not going to play’ and then he can say okay. But he probably just thinks ‘I’m going to get through this and at some point they’ll have to play me and I won’t have to go to Manchester”.

“He is literally already at his dream club, living in his dream city because he values the quality of life there very much.”
