On Friday’s Bloomberg “Surveillance” show, White House Deputy National Security Adviser Daleep Singh said Russia was becoming a “junior partner” to China and said that if China was “serious about defending the principles it stands for, sovereignty and territorial integrity”, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “is the time to show it”. Singh also asked if China cares about the “global fallout from Putin’s war” in energy and food.
singh said [relevant remarks begin around 2:07:20] that Russia is becoming “China’s junior partner” and that China will have “increasing influence over Russia”, while discussing America’s position towards India.
He later added, “Well look, China has a choice to make. If he is serious about respecting the principles he defends, sovereignty and territorial integrity, now is the time to show it. Europe is watching. The United States is watching. The world is watching. Are they serious about these principles? And do they care about the fallout, the global fallout from Putin’s war on energy and food markets? They already have a local supply shock due to the zero-COVID policy. Do they want to add to this shock? So we are watching very closely. We have options in case China actively tries to undermine our sanctions or reverse these measures. »
