“I’d be in jail or probably dead somewhere if it wasn’t for boxing” – Jake Paul talks about the importance of boxing in his life

Social media star turned professional boxer Jake Paul has claimed he would be in jail or probably dead if he hadn’t discovered boxing.

It’s a typical sports narrative, with the old adage that boxing saves more lives than it takes, and there are countless stories of fighters from underprivileged backgrounds using boxing as a way to get a better life.

That being said, this narrative might not have been expected of Jake Paul, a middle-class social media star who had his own show on the Disney Channel and made millions from his online fame.

Speaking on former boxing trainer Teddy Atlas’ THE FIGHT podcast, Paul revealed how boxing potentially saved him from the wrong path.

“Boxing saved my life, so I owe him a ton,” he said, “I’d be in jail or probably dead somewhere if it wasn’t for boxing.

“I was going down a really weird path in my early twenties that wasn’t sustainable and because of that, I owe it all to this sport.”

Paul went on to explain that despite the much criticism he receives for his involvement in boxing, he just wants the best for the sport.

“That’s why I’m so passionate about making boxing even better,” he continued.

“I have the hat that says boxing is getting great again… I will slowly earn the respect of more people.

“I understand people’s point of view of how it’s a circus and how it’s not boxing, but again all I do is work and try to get better at the gym and fight tougher opponents every time.

“I respect this sport more than anything. I think anyone who puts on 10oz gloves and walks into that square circle should be respected because you’re risking your life at the end of the day and that’s why I take it very seriously.

“All I ever wanted to do was contribute to the sport, bring new eyes to the sport, help fighters get paid more.”

Paul is not only a fighter, but he also has his own promotion company called MVP Promotions and he will be co-promoting the upcoming mega-fight between Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano alongside Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.
