Turkey’s veteran star Burak Yilamz has revealed that while he didn’t want to retire like this, he didn’t believe it was right to continue but admitted it wasn’t an emotional decision . The 36-year-old scored in a 2-1 loss to Portugal but then missed a decisive chance to level the scores.
As Turkey faced Portugal in their 2022 World Cup qualifiers, few gave them a chance against the winners of the Euro 2016 but the Turks fought a fair fight. That was despite goals from Otavio and Diogo Jota giving them a 2-0 lead before Burak Yilmaz brought his side home with a goal. But as Turkey continued to push, it was Yilmaz who had the chance to level the scores with less than six minutes remaining.
However, the 36-year-old veteran striker missed his shot by a mile and gave Portugal a lifeline, which they clung to for their dear life until the final whistle. He saw an emotional Yilmaz in shock that he missed the chance and he apologized but confirmed he was retiring from international football. The Lille striker further added that he doesn’t want to leave international football like this but doesn’t think it’s right for him to continue.
“I don’t know how I didn’t score, I’m still in shock. We have turned our country upside down. I am sorry. I am really sorry. It was my last chance at the World Cup. From today, it’s over. I thought it was a precise goal when we got the penalty. I started thinking about the future. I’m disappointed because I never thought of missing it. I am sorry. I will score this penalty every night of my life, maybe without sleeping, in my dreams,” Yilmaz said, Goal reported.
“I wouldn’t want to give up after a game like this, but I don’t think it’s right to continue. Thanks to my coaches. My decision to quit is not an emotional one. I make this decision logically. If extreme and unbelievable situations occur, then I will help you.
“Our country must pass the flag to our young friends. The new generation, the new structure. It’s the right thing. My decision is not the result of a disappointment, nor of a penalty. I think our brothers will now do what is necessary.
