Inter Miami commercial director Xavier Asensi has admitted that the MLS side are targeting the best players in the world, including Lionel Messi, although a move depends on him. The 35-year-old is under contract with Paris Saint-Germain but his contract expires in the summer of 2023.
Whereas Lionel MessiParis Saint-Germain’s move has generated a lot of hype and promise as the 35-year-old has struggled with injuries and other issues in his first season in France. So much so that Messi failed to reach double goals for the first time in over 15 years as he scored just six league goals, despite the Argentine scoring five times in seven appearances of the Champions League. That, combined with PSG’s disappointing run in the Champions League, has left many worried that the team won’t gel properly.
However, with rumors linking the Argentine with a summer move, many believe PSG could very well cut their losses and let Messi go. But club officials have denied the claims although Xavier Asensi believes Inter Miami have a chance of luring the 35-year-old to MLS. Inter Miami’s commercial director further added that while the club wants to sign world-class players, the decision ultimately lies with Messi which could hurt their chances.
“Yes, with a few caveats. You can’t compare Leo Messi to any other player; he is different. That said, what we are looking for is to be the benchmark for football in the United States, and for that, the important thing is the players and the show that you can do. For that, you need the best players and having them is a real goal at this club. As far as Leo Messi is concerned, there’s him and then there’s everyone else.”
“It’s up to him and what he wants. We want to have the best players in the world, and I think Messi is the best in history. From there it’s up to him. We want To be the benchmark for football in the United States is one of the goals of the organization.”
