I think signing Cristiano Ronaldo was worth it, admits Roy Keane

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has insisted his former side’s decision to bring back Cristiano Ronaldo the previous summer was worth it, although he acknowledged the Portuguese star could do more for his side. Ronaldo has signed for the English giants on a two-year contract.

Cristiano Ronaldo joins Manchester United from Juventus in the summer for an initial fee of €15million as he sought to embark on his second spell at the English club after leaving the club for real Madrid in 2009.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored sensational goals for the English giants, although he hasn’t been able to stop United’s inconsistent form this campaign. Despite United’s lackluster performances in domestic and European competitions, the Portuguese mercurial has scored 21 goals and three assists in 34 appearances in all competitions.

United are still in the hunt for a top-four spot which will guarantee the Red Devils access to the Champions League for next season. The Premier League side are set to usher in a new era under a new manager in the upcoming campaign and will look to rely on Ronaldo’s talismanic presence. Former United player Keane claimed Ronaldo’s time so far has been successful but pointed to specific flaws that needed improvement.

“I think the bet was worth it. Overall, he’s not a good signing because of his age, but I still think he can bring something to the party – and I think he did. But what happened around him wasn’t good enough. But I still think Ronaldo could probably show better leadership skills. I know he was upset once or twice when he was sent off, he clearly wasn’t going to play every game, but he still shows moments – the Tottenham game, some of the European games,” Keane said. at LADbible.

“I know that [Louis] van Gaal recently said that Man Utd are a commercial club, and the signing was part of that, it was part of the brand image, part of the share price,” he added.
