‘I think Mike Tyson likes Bob Marley…if you know what I mean’ – Frank Bruno adored the reimagined Iron Mike at reunion with revenge exactly 26 years ago

Frank Bruno and Mike Tyson’s paths have crossed twice in their careers, with their rematch taking place exactly 26 years ago.

The first time came in 1989 when the British heavyweight challenged for the ‘Iron Mike’ belts, but was stopped within five rounds.

The second came on March 16, 1996 when Tyson knocked him out in three to claim the belt Bruno had just won from Oliver McCall.

Back then, the American was a hugely intimidating force, known for good reason as ‘the baddest man on the planet’.

Bruno had finally won his world title on his fourth attempt, losing to Tim Witherspoon, Tyson and Lennox Lewis, before Iron Mike ruined his life.

“I would have reigned supreme if it hadn’t been for Iron Mike Tyson,” the Briton told Sky Documentary.

Now however, Tyson is 55 years old and, although he recently made a ring comeback, is a reformed character.

Bruno and Tyson crossed paths again

In 2020, Bruno flew to the United States to reunite with Tyson for a documentary.

When asked if they are now friends, Bruno responded with a hearty laugh and told talkSPORT’s ‘Fight of My Life’: “How can you be friends with someone who tries to knock you out and to kill you?

“Yeah, I’ve been there. He is very kind and very down to earth and very calm.

“He didn’t have the entourage around him, so he seemed a lot better than having all the yes-men around him.

“He just got his PA and he just kept it at one level. It was the best I’ve ever seen.

“I think he likes Bob Marley though…if you know what I mean, Harry?”

Their relationship dates back decades, long before their first title fight in 1989 – when Tyson had already won eight world title fights.

Bruno recalled in the Sky Documentary: “I remember when you were 15 in the Catskill and we fought together. I saw you grow up.

“When [Tyson’s legendary trainer Cus D’Amato] speak, he was like a pastor, in addition to being a sensible man.
