Manchester United legend Gary Neville has admitted he never trusted Arsenal to keep their place in the top four and feared for them because of their problems. The pundit also added that Manchester United are out of the running and Tottenham are now favorites for the job.
While Arsenal were favorites to finish in the final top four a few weeks ago, the whole situation has changed as the Gunners have now lost three of their last five games. This includes defeats against Brentford, crystal palace and Liverpool with genuine concern that the north London side will not finish in the top four. However, in light of this, Tottenham have taken full advantage of their rivals dropping points and have only lost once in their last six games.
That puts Antonio Conte’s side in pole position and they have a three-point lead over fifth-place Arsenal, but the race stretches past the two north London rivals. West Ham, Manchester United and even wolves are all part of the race but Gary Neville believes Tottenham are the favorites to secure the final Champions League spot now. The pundit also added that he never trusted Arsenal to keep their cool and feared for them as they were yet to prove themselves as contenders.
“I never really trusted Arsenal and I was scared for them. It’s now three out of four defeats for Arsenal and I said a few weeks ago that I didn’t fully trust them. reason behind that was that they had to prove they could get through a run-in where they were favorites for the top four. Those doubts are starting to creep in,” Neville said, Sky Sports reported.
“I have to say that Tottenham are getting there thanks to the fact that they have had a bit of experience in four to five years of getting to the Champions League and basically through the misfortunes of Arsenal and United.
“West Ham also lost this weekend [at Brentford] so in some ways it’s up to you, Tottenham. They might as well take the Champions League spot. Why not? We know they have an exceptional front two which is now a front three with Kulusevski.
The former Manchester United defender also revealed the Red Devils were out of the running in his opinion which came as a shock to him especially after the international break. But Neville added that the race now depends solely on whether Arsenal can recover or whether Tottenham can continue to win games and increase the gap.
“We know that, but there is still a lot to play for. I think United are finished. If I thought the players had anything they could still try because they still have to play against Arsenal, chelsea and Liverpool but I think they’re done. I thought maybe they did it a few weeks ago.
“I never considered coming out of the international break, they would be in as bad a situation as they are, so now it’s a question of whether Arsenal can recover, but I’m just not sure. I think now it’s up to Tottenham to take it,” he added.
