“I even want to cry” – Marcel Desailly laments that Benzema does not get enough credit despite passing Ronaldo

Chelsea legend Marcel Desailly has praised Real Madrid superstar Karim Benzema, saying the Frenchman has passed Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazario in some facets of the game.

Speaking to Spanish publication AS, Desailly was outraged that people did not mention Benzema as one of the greatest players of all time despite the striker having proven his worth several times over the course of his illustrious career. He explained:

“I talk to people. When we talk about the players of this generation who are going to make football history, when I ask my friends this question in private, Benzema’s name does not come up automatically. And it is not Normal! It should be like that. The stats back him up, he’s magnificent in every way: as a forward or as a second striker … I even want to cry. “

Karim Benzema joined Real Madrid from Lyon in 2009 and has become one of the greatest strikers of this generation. The Frenchman has scored 301 goals in 584 appearances in all competitions for Los Blancos. The forward also won three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies during his time at the club, adding to the four Ligue 1 titles he won before joining Los Blancos.

Benzema has been on fire this season, having scored 22 goals and provided eight assists in 25 games in all competitions as Real Madrid are atop La Liga.

Desailly was also impressed with Benzema’s ability to adapt over time and take over from Real Madrid. He said:

“He is a player who knew how to challenge himself when Cristiano left and when they were together, putting himself at his disposal. He was able to demonstrate on a daily basis that he was better than players like Higuaín or Morata, let us remember that they had to choose the one that remains. “

The former Chelsea defender even went so far as to say that Benzema has passed former Real Madrid striker Ronaldo Nazario in some ways. He said:

“Florentino Pérez has trusted him since he went to Lyon for him. He has passed Ronaldo, his idol, in some statistics. It’s amazing what Benzema achieves but he is not seen for what he is , it’s rare.”

30 – Apart from Lionel Messi (nine campaigns) and Cristiano Ronaldo (seven), Karim Benzema is the fourth player to score +30 goals in a single year in #The league this century, after Luis Suárez (2015 & 2016), Radamel Falcao (2012) & Ronaldo Nazario (2003).
