Indian Railways will design and manufacture hydrogen trains in India by December and run them on heritage routes such as Lonavala, Ooty, Kalka-Shimla and Darjeeling, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told CNBC-TV18, announcing major development plans for the national carrier.

Vaishnaw also said the ministry was working on plans to set up coach manufacturing factories in Latur of Maharashtra, Sonepat of Haryana and Rae Bareli of UP. This is in addition to the current ICF Chennai coach manufacturing facility.

“Adding nearly 300 million tonnes as additional freight has helped us break even,” he said, adding that this money is now being used for operational expenses. For capital expenditure, it depends on public funding.

The news came on a day when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced an allocation of Rs 2.4 lakh crore for railways in the 2023 budget.

Noting that the next two years will be watershed for railways, Vaishnaw said India will soon start exporting railway technology.

On the electronics sector, Vaishnaw said the budget announcement is very conducive to electronics manufacturing.

The government has reduced duties on cell phone lenses. India will soon become one of the leading manufacturers and exporters of mobile phones, he said, adding that mobile phones will soon be among India’s top 10 export products.
