Huntsville native selected as costume designer for Birmingham 2022 World Games

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Huntsville may be Rocket City, but it lends the talent of one of its own to Magic City. Twyla Grider, from Huntsville, has been chosen as the costume designer for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 World Games in Birmingham.

Grider was born and spent part of her childhood in Huntsville. She then attended Auburn University and earned her fashion merchandising degree in New York to pursue her passion. She is now CEO and founder of Stellar Creative Collective.

Her love for fashion started at a young age.

“I started designing and making clothes when I was about six years old,” Grider said.

His mother was also a big supporter of his art.

“I would go into my teenage fashion and be like, ‘Mom, I want this,’ and she’d be like, ‘Okay, let’s go to JoAnn’s and pick out the fabric,'” she continued.

News 19 reached out to Grider to find out more about how she was selected for the World Games and her costume design inspiration.

Grider told News 19 that a colleague reached out to her and asked her to sketch out some of the ideas she was thinking of.

“I took the time to do it for her, I sent the sketches, she said ‘Great, thank you so much!’ and then I didn’t do anything to her,” Grider explained. “Then, about a month later, she was like, ‘How would you like to be my costumer?’, and I was like, ‘What?’ She said she had a feeling I would be fine so I said ‘sure!’

“It’s maybe one of the biggest things that’s happened for the state of Alabama, on the international stage, and so being able to show that in what I do, which is fashion design , it’s truly an honour,” Grider said.

Grider says she is so excited to be able to show her home country what she can do and hopes to inspire others along the way.

“When I was younger, I didn’t see a lot of people in my industry where I live from,” she continued, “So it also gives young kids who are thinking of being in this field, that you can do it too, and you can do it at home.

She continued, “My goal is to be that person that any man or woman, boy or girl, can look up and say, ‘Hey, I can do this too.'”

Grider says designing costumes for the opening and closing ceremonies is a big undertaking, as more than 700 people are in the cast. She said the ceremonies would be a “big production.”

She estimates that she has personally designed over 50 costumes so far. The World Games take place from July 7 to 17 in Birmingham.
