Huntsville gets first FDA-approved robotic dentist assist

HUNTSVILLE Ala. (WHNT) – A robot-assisted surgical device brings GPS technology to the dental practice. And it sailed to Huntsville.

Dentistry Today, located in the Parkway Place mall, follows the office’s name by being the only practice in the area to use the latest FDA-approved technology for dental implants.

Dr. Leslie Barrilleaux, who runs Dentistry Today, purchased the YOMI robotic dental system for his practice.
It is the first and only FDA-cleared robotic surgical system in the United States. He helps provide guidance and support to dental surgeons when performing implant procedures.

“We want to have the things available that are going to add the latest technology and bring the benefits to the patient we serve and care for and give them the best to offer,” Barrilleaux said.

With the use of robotic assistance, multiple implants can be performed in a single visit; avoiding the traditional routine of multiple visits after each implantation. Barrilleaux said learning about the robot’s benefits made arriving in Huntsville a “no brainer.”

“It’s going to be safety, it’s going to bring less recovery time, it’s going to bring less pain to the procedure, it’s going to be able to do more at the same time and [fewer visits].”

The GPS software provides a visual of a virtual implant at the desired location on the patient. He then creates a plan for the dentist when preparing for surgery. Although the dentist is still responsible for the physical delivery of the implant, the precision of the robot helps surgeons avoid interfering with important parts of the patient’s body.

Dentistry Today has the nation’s 100th YOMI robot. The second closest dentist practice with a robotic dental system is in Birmingham.
