Hungerford Stakes: William Buick and Jumby combine to give Eve Johnson Haughton another big win at Newbury | Race News

William Buick delivered Jumby a perfectly timed challenge to win the BetVictor Hungerford Stakes at Newbury.

Coached by Eve Johnson Houghton, the 9-1 shot seemed to have a lot to do with players like favorite Pogo having failed to strike in five outings so far this season but had run well into the competitive handicaps.

However, after riding the final mile on the heels of the Dubai poet, Buick steered Jumby between the horses and the New Bay colt took off. He cleared in a few strides, coming home a length and three-quarters from the good.

The minor places were hotly contested, with Dubai Poet clinging to second place by a short Wings Of War header, with Primo Bacio, who also raced up front, a little further back in fourth.

Johnson Houghton said: “I’ve always believed in this horse – and it’s great to get it right. And funnily enough, William has always believed in him and he rides Godolphin horses, so if he believes in him, then everyone can.

“He got it right today. He’s still riding it if he can. He’s in York City next Saturday and although he probably won’t be racing, all options are open as he likes dry land and I don’t want to wait for him to soften, I don’t want to miss the floor with him.

“We’ll see how he does, but he’s full of himself. The Prix Forêt ends next week, so we’ll probably go – at least we’ll enter him. I haven’t told the guys yet , but that’s where we’re going.”
