Those in attendance weren’t disappointed either, with Wearside putting on a truly entertaining game.

After a brilliant start to the game, Alex Neil’s side took the lead after 14 minutes, much to the delight of the home fans.

Lynden Gooch broke free on the right flank, before his floating cross found Jack Clarke in the box.

Despite his short stature, the former Tottenham man rose the tallest to head the ball into the back of the Coventry net.

Sunderland dominated for the duration of the first half and held the Sky Blues at bay, giving them the lead at the break.

The second half saw Elliot Embleton closing in on Sunderland as he sent his effort narrowly over the bar, while Coventry also posed a real threat with Matty Godden sending a decent effort wide of the mark .

Coventry kept pushing and could have seen themselves level with Kasey Palmer, but their efforts from the edge of the box overshot the bar.

The Sky Blues scored their breakthrough six minutes from time as Viktor Gyokeres scored a sublime solo effort to equalize the game.

The 24-year-old has been linked with Fulham and Middlesbrough this summer and could attract more interest after his superb effort from 20 yards out.

While it was an afternoon that ended in frustration for Sunderland, fans will be delighted to be back in the Championship and will no doubt be hoping their successful home support can help them retain their second-tier status during the campaign.
