How Vanessa Bayer’s Love of Home Shopping Inspired Her New Show
To prepare, Vanessa and I like it for you co-creator Jeremy Beiller takes a trip to the mecca of home shopping: QVC Studios in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
“Jeremy and I were able to take a tour of QVC where we were able to meet these two hosts, Jane Tracy and Mary Beth Roe, which I always watched as a kid,” Vanessa said. “They’re still hosts there. They are the greatest hosts there. Even after seven seasons SNL, where I met a new celebrity guest host every week, I was so impressed with them. They talked to us for about an hour, which went by really quickly because they’re so fun to listen to.”
In the first episode of I like it for you, Vanessa’s character is featured on SVN, the home shopping network where she’s just been hired, and she’s introduced to the multitude of hosts she’s always admired on TV. For Vanessa, it felt eerily like her first day on Saturday Night Live.
“I remember walking in and meeting Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg and Abby Elliot and just be like, ‘Oh my god,'” Vanessa recalled. “I was like, ‘Okay, that’s my job now, I have to pretend to act normal around these superstars.’ It was so crazy to me that they were my colleagues. I had to tell myself to act like it was normal.”
