Many of us fall into the trap of saving the weekend work we need to finish for Sunday night – and that can make the latter part of our weekends feel a lot like Monday.
To avoid “Sunday scares” — the pressure to catch up on work before the work week — do some catch-up work earlier in the weekend, so the last thing you do before Monday is something fun.
Cassie Mogilner Holmes, associate professor of marketing and behavioral decision-making at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, has a suggestion for taking it even further: all weekends like a mini-holiday and don’t work at all on Saturday and Sunday. People who do this stay in bed a little longer, cuddle their loved one a little more, or spend a little more time eating and less time on chores and work responsibilities – and start the new week feeling genuinely rested.
Mogilner Holmes says that having the weekend-as-a-holiday mindset helps you be more connected to the present moment. “Time stands still for a bit,” she said. “It’s like you’re finally breathing.”
