How the vote changed in 2022 to give Republicans control of the House

Voters across the country leaned toward Republicans in the midterm elections — veering more right in areas won by former President Donald Trump and also veering right in nearly every district won by the president. Biden. House Republicans, however, won only a small number of seats.

Republicans’ tally may rise as the count continues, but they will end up with a narrow majority. This unexpected result belies a broader movement to the right when the votes in each district are compared to the presidential vote two years ago.

About this story

A few remaining votes are still being counted, even in districts that have been called by The Washington Post, so the amount each district shifts from the 2020 presidential election could still change. Changes were calculated by comparing the two parties’ vote share in the 2020 presidential election to the two parties’ vote share in the 2022 House elections. Changes were only calculated in precincts where both parties had a candidate on the ballot, a winner was declared and at least 90% of the expected votes had been counted. The historic midterm seat gains come from the Brookings Institution.
