How strong is the far right now that Alternative for Germany MPs no longer have identity cards? – POLICY

Remove the AfD’s 17 MEPs and that brings the ID back to its planned number of 68 lawmakers in the next Parliament.

A smaller ID card has a big impact on the far-right European Conservatives and Reformists group. The ECR currently has 69 MEPs and the POLITICO poll predicts that number will increase slightly to 71.

If these figures are verified, ECR would remain ahead of ID. But if the AfD had not been expelled, the ID would be ahead.

But there will be horse-trading after the election, with parties alternating between groups. Maybe AfD joins ID? Maybe a new faction has been created? What about the Fidesz of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who votes with around ten MEPs who do not currently sit in any group?

Adding the projected totals for ID, ECR, AfD and Fidesz gives 166 MPs out of 720.

If they decided (very hypothetically) to all work together, this far-right supergroup would occupy second place, just 10 seats behind Ursula von der Leyen’s European People’s Party.
