How Elon Musk can unleash the full potential of Twitter

The world is speculating where Elon Musk will take Twitter. This is an important question, because the social network has the potential to do much more than it currently does. Today, Twitter is like Hoover Dam, with all of its raging power harnessed to light a 40-watt light bulb. But with a few fairly minor changes, Twitter would have a good chance of becoming the basic interface between users and all of their digital information. As such, it would help the US software industry maintain its position as a world leader.

In 1994 Eric Freeman and I invented the Twitter-like stream, called Lifestream. On your computer, a Lifestream looks like a single file of playing cards receding into the depth of the screen. The idea is to combine all your digital possessions – documents, photos, videos, bookmarks, etc. – with all your emails and all of your digital future, as far as you know. The future holds upcoming appointments and events, work to do later, business information, and more. Each of these elements corresponds to a card.
