House Dems block fentanyl crackdown as more than 100,000 die each year

Even as more than 100,000 Americans die each year from overdoses and poisonings, many of them linked to fentanyl, House Democrats have blocked a plan that would crack down on the deadly substance flowing almost exclusively from the US-Mexico border to American communities.

This week, 220 House Democrats blocked consideration of Rep. Michelle Fischbach’s (R-MN) Halt All Lethal Trafficking of Fentanyl bill to permanently classify fentanyl-related substances on Schedule I of the controlled substances law.

Such a change would permanently make it illegal to sell fentanyl-related substances.

In April, House Democrats blocked consideration of similar legislation that would have cracked down on fentanyl-related substances. The ongoing blocking of bills to combat fentanyl overdoses and poisonings comes as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials have warned parents to carry naloxone in case their child overdoses on fentanyl.

The warning is in response to concerns that Mexican drug cartels, which traffic most Chinese-made fentanyl to the United States, are targeting children by packaging tens of thousands of fentanyl pills in boxes. Skittles and Nerds candy bags with vape pens.

More recently, in Phoenix, Arizona, law enforcement investigators seized nearly one million fentanyl pills from a hideout. Just two milligrams of fentanyl can kill a person.

In April, the CDC reported that more than 100,000 Americans had died from drug overdoses in the previous 12 months. Nearly two-thirds of those deaths were fentanyl-related.

In Ohio alone, 81% of drug overdose deaths were linked to fentanyl in 2020. This is an increase from 2019, 2018 and 2017, when fentanyl was linked to approximately 76-71% of drug overdose death.

Months ago, Anne Milgram, head of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), said there was enough fentanyl flowing into American communities last year, via the southern border, “to kill every citizen Americans”.

Some Senate Republicans have suggested moving the use of the CDC’s Title 42 authority to the southern border, which allows authorities to quickly deport many illegal aliens, from a Chinese coronavirus function to a control maneuver. against fentanyl.
