Honda is recalling nearly 250,000 vehicles in the United States due to a manufacturing defect that could cause the engine to malfunction, stall or stop while driving.

The recall applies to certain 2015 through 2020 Acura TLX cars, 2016 through 2020 Acura MDX SUVs, 2017 and 2019 Ridgeline pickup trucks, 2018 through 2019 Odyssey minivans, and 2016 and 2018 through 2019 Pilot SUVs.

According to the company, a manufacturing error in the engine’s crankshaft could lead to premature wear and seizure of the connecting rod bearing in the affected engines.

“If the connecting rod bearing seizes, the engine may be damaged and malfunction, stall, stop while driving and/or fail to start, thereby increasing the risk of fire, accident or injury,” announced Honda Friday.

Abnormal engine noise, engine stalling or reduced engine power as well as an illuminated check engine light are all warning signs of a possible manufacturing error, the automaker added.

Honda received the first market complaint about the defect in February 2020, according to documents released last week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As of November 3, Honda had collected 1,450 warranty claims regarding the issue, but no reports of injuries or deaths.

Owners of affected vehicles will be directly informed by mail from January 2. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, repair or replace the engine, depending on the company. Honda said it would also reimburse owners who paid for repairs at their own expense.

According to the automaker, the manufacturing issue was fixed in production in 2020.
