“Hit them in the face,” Lukashenko tells Belarusian athletes ahead of Olympics – POLITICO
“Anger in sport is important,” Lukashenko said. “If you are already qualified and you go there with a neutral status, punch them in the face, show them that you are a real Belarusian,” he continued.
Lukashenko did not specify whether his remarks were made in the spirit of sporting competition or if the implication was literal.
The leader added that if Belarusians emerge victorious from the games, it would be a good tool for Belarusian politicians. “Then we can also hit them in the face politically,” he said.
Russian and Belarusian competitors participating as neutral athletes will not be able to participate in the parade of delegations during the opening ceremony.
Their national anthems will not be played at the awards ceremonies, and their national colors, flags and any other identification are also prohibited.
Athletes hired by the Belarusian and Russian military, or who actively support the invasion of Ukraine, will not be eligible. Belarusian and Russian state officials will not be invited or accredited to the games, which will take place from July 26 to August 11.
The committee estimates that around 30 Russians and 20 Belarusians will qualify to participate in this year’s Summer Olympics.
