TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Gabby Petito’s mother hit back at comments made by the Laundrie family lawyer on Tuesday regarding her daughter’s death.
Lawyer Steve Bertolino issued an SMS statement calling Petito’s death a tragedy, but dubbed the fact that his fiance, Brian Laundrie, was only a person of interest in his death.
“While Brian Laundrie is currently charged with unauthorized use of a debit card belonging to Gabby, Brian is only seen as a person of interest in relation to Gabby Petito’s death,” Bertolino wrote. “Brian is still missing at this time and when he is located we will deal with the pending fraud charge against him.”
However, Petito’s mother Nichole Schmidt rejected his comment.
“His words are garbage. Keep talking, ”she wrote in a text to JB Biunno of WFLA.
The back-and-forth comes after a Wyoming coroner confirmed Petito’s cause of death was strangulation and the mode of death was homicide.
At that time, the coroner said Petito was likely killed three to four weeks before she was found.
According to the lawyer for the Petito family, no further statements will be made by the victim’s family until she brings her remains home.
Residents of North Port were devastated to learn more details of Petito’s death. Sandra Vaughn said her heart sank upon hearing the news. She visited Gabby’s memorial on Monday and followed her story closely.
“Gabby’s parents, I’m so sorry,” Vaughn said. “My heart is breaking for you. My heart is truly breaking for you, and I hope you can find some kind of peace somewhere, one way or another.
“I pray the laundries come out and give you some kind of answers,” she continued.
