The incident reportedly happened during the Tohopekaliga Tiger Invitational in Kissimmee, Florida.
A breezy clip of a Florida high school track and field meet has gone viral online after two runners faced off in a race and one decided to violently escalate matters.
The incident happened in Kissimmee about a half hour south of Orlando during the Tohopekaliga Tiger Invitational on Saturday.
As seen in the short video which has been viewed nearly 2 million times on Twitter, a racer in a black uniform comes up behind a rival in a white uniform and kicks him from behind, which immediately knocks his victim to the ground.
According to TMZ and Canadian Running, witnesses say the duo had precedents.
Prior to the stunt, the athlete in black was allegedly standing on the track during the 1,600m event which the white-clad runner was spinning while leading the race.
The athlete in white allegedly first yelled at the athlete in black, who was not participating in the race, to get out of the way. And when he refused and deliberately got in his way on the next round, the athlete in white pushed the athlete in black.
This then obviously infuriated the Athlete in Black to the point that he decided to escalate the violence. Pursuing, he appeared to have joined the race, but instead came from behind to strike the subject of his anger.
The widely circulated clip was named “High School Track Fight Club” due to the violent nature of the incident and it is unclear so far whether the victim suffered any injuries or was able to complete the race.
As a female voice is heard advising “keep on going” an angry man can be heard overhead shouting repeatedly: “Are you kidding me?” as someone else describes the events as “bulls**t”.
For TMZ, the host school claimed no Osceola County students were involved in the fracas that law enforcement and the Florida High School Athletic Association have been made aware of.
Local police have so far refused to give more information. But the incident is just the latest in American youth sports where punching is commonplace.
In November last year, the daughter of former NBA star Corey Benjamin was filmed punching a much lighter 15-year-old opposition member, who suffered a neck contusion and concussion, during a basketball game in Garden Grove, California. .
This “shocked and disappointed” the ex-Chicago Bulls guard and the girl’s mother, Latira Shonty Hunt, were later charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and grievous bodily harm after apparently appearing to provoke the assault by shouting “you better hit her for that” – as heard on a separate viral clip – for which she could face a year behind bars.
Also in November 2021, an Iowa high school player was arrested for a brutal punch during ceremonial handshakes following his Carlisle High School Wildcats’ humiliating 72-47 loss to the Nevada High School Cubs .
The attacker first went for his victim’s stomach, then added a knockout blow before being knocked to the ground by others.
