Here’s how northern Alabamians can help Ukrainian refugees

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – From donation drives to peaceful protests, Alabamians in the Tennessee Valley are finding ways to help and support Ukrainian refugees.

The Salvation Army already has teams on the ground in Ukraine, Poland and other neighboring countries to help those in need. The organization also collects cash donations to purchase items for the refugees. These items include food, hygiene products and other basic necessities.

So when it comes to what people can do locally, Salvation Army Corps officer Capt. Chris Bryant told News 19 that cash donations have the biggest impact.

“It helps Ukraine in many ways. First, it stimulates their economy because what we’re doing is we’re not buying the stuff here in America to ship it, they’re getting the money, the Salvation Army straight to Ukraine,” Bryant explained. . “They are able to buy from any businesses that are still able to sell locally to boost their local economies and businesses.”

Besides the Salvation Army, there are also a handful of other national and even international charities that collect donations for Ukrainian refugees. Some of these organizations are UNICEF, the Red Cross and Voices of Children, but a more comprehensive list can be found here.

For anyone who chooses to donate to a charity or organization, the Better Business Bureau urges people to confirm that the charity is legitimate before donating. Advice on how to determine if a charity is trustworthy can be found here.
