Here are seven key points from the CMI report on Moroccan electronic payment activity for the first quarter of 2022:

1. Overall Moroccan electronic payment activity experienced a remarkable recovery during the 1st quarter of 2022. The overall volume of activity is up significantly compared to the same period of 2021, with a 15% increase in the number of transactions and 10.9% of the total amount.
2. The number of bank cards issued by Moroccan issuers reached 18.3 million bank cards in circulation, including almost 12.1 million cards with contactless functionality.
3. The domestic activity of Moroccan cards continues to grow with 14.7% in number of transactions and 10.3% in total amount. The payment activity was more dynamic than the withdrawal activity, with an increase in payments of 26.2% in number of transactions and 16.2% of the total amount, while the withdrawal activity experienced a growth of 11.4% in number of operations and 9.6% in total amount.
4. Foreign card activity resumed an upward trend, with an increase of 29.8% in number of transactions and 32.5% in overall amount compared to the same period of 2021.
5. The activity of Moroccan cards abroad achieved an increase of 33.4% in number of operations and 66% in total amount. 6. Internet payment activity remained on a strong upward trend with an increase of 34.3% in the number of operations and 19.3% in the overall amount.
