‘He showed what he’s talking about’ – England star wowed by Argentina captain Lionel Messi’s ‘incredible’ performance against Mexico

England striker Jack Grealish was amazed by Lionel Messi’s performance for Argentina in their thrilling 2-0 win over Mexico at the FIFA World Cup.

Argentina entered the game against Le Tricolor on November 26 knowing a win was vital as they lost their FIFA World Cup opener 2-1 to Saudi Arabia.

Everyone was stunned by La Albiceleste’s poor performance in the first half, with many criticizing Lionel Messi’s display.

However, the Argentinian icon took the game by the scruff of the neck and fired an incredible 64th-minute goal to send his side on their way to victory.

Impressive youngster Enzo Fernandez clinched Argentina’s second in the 87th minute but it was yet another night when Lionel Messi made headlines.

The win was vital for Argentina as it lifted them into second place, one point behind group leaders Poland, who they will face in their final group match on November 30.

Grealish was interviewed ahead of England’s clash with Wales on November 29 and was among those mesmerized by Messi.

He told talkSPORT:

“I watch every game to be honest. We have screens everywhere and it’s nice to have games all day. I watched Messi, amazing. He just showed what he’s talking about in that second half. time, but again, Mbappe did it too.

The pressure had mounted on Argentina after their shocking loss to Saudi Arabia.

It was one of the biggest shocks in FIFA World Cup history, and Lionel Scaloni’s side were in dire need of a bounce back against Mexico.

Following their victory over the North Americans, Messi expressed his relief at having secured a victory as they are now back on track in Group C.

He said (via the Guardian):

“We lived with unease given the defeat in the opening game [against Saudi Arabia] was something we weren’t expecting.

He continued,

“The days seemed very long and we were eager for the chance to turn things around. We knew it was a critical match. Fortunately, we had the chance to win and that was a weight on our shoulders, a reason of joy and peace of mind because everything is up to us again.

If Scaloni’s men beat Poland, they will qualify as Group C winners for the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

Lionel Messi is set to take on Barcelona leader Robert Lewandowski in what is now a tantalizing encounter at Stadium 974.
