Former Liverpool star Didi Hamann has played down Darwin Nunez’s header on Joachim Andersen and insists the Reds striker ‘just crossed him’.
The 23-year-old striker will serve a three-match ban following his challenge against the Crystal Palace man in Monday’s 1-1 draw.
The straight red attack means Nunez will miss the upcoming games against Manchester United, Bournemouth and Newcastle United.
Many were outraged by the headbutt and talkSPORT’s Jason Cundy suggested the Uruguayan be punished longer, calling for a five-game ban.
However, former Liverpool midfielder Hamann – who won the Champions League with the Reds in 2005 – thinks the reaction was a bit overdone.
“I think he just got into it,” he said on talkSPORT Breakfast the morning after the game.
“It wasn’t even a whim, it just walked into defender Andersen.
“If it was a good whim, I can understand it, to extend the ban, but he just rammed it, three games is enough.”

The Uruguayan headbutt on Andersen came as the palace man pushed him to get his attention.
Nunez turned and shook his head at the Dane forcefully, with Andersen then left on the ground.
Hamann conceded the Liverpool man probably should have kept his cool and avoided being sent off.
“Yes you shouldn’t, we all agree he shouldn’t,” added the German.
And optical chain Specsavers, which specializes in providing eyewear to people in need, couldn’t help but suggest Hamann needed a visit to one of its stores.
Commenting on the talkSPORT video, the Specsavers Twitter account said: “Are you free for a date today?”
