CHICAGO (SCS) — In a milestone celebration for a Chicago nonprofit that helps those struggling with addiction, the Haymarket Center’s 45th Anniversary Gala raised funds for the center’s work.
CBS 2’s Irika Sargent hosted the gala.
She also sat down for an exclusive interview with actor Rob Lowe to talk about her own recovery and why coming to Chicago to show her support was so important.
Irika: Why come here and be part of the Haymarket event? What about Haymarket that drew you here?
Robin: First of all, I just need to say that I love Chicago. Chicago has been very good to me. And the other thing that has been very good for me is the recovery. If I get there, I’ll be 32 years sober in about a month, and this life has given me everything. So any time I can come to a place that’s for Haymarket or places that help people start setting up their lives in search of healing, that’s my greatest honor.
Irika: What message would you like to send to other people who are thinking about recovery, who are thinking about making this change?
Robin: So many families are struggling with the problem of drugs or alcohol, and for me that is the promise of a better life, and there is a way forward, and we know how to do it. When I started my journey, my biggest fear was not having fun anymore because I was 26 when I gave it all up. And I had more fun, I had more good times, I had more laughs than I ever had when I was “having fun”. So for me, it’s just to allow people to take that first step and start that road to the life that they were meant to have.
Irika: How often do you have people come to tell you that what you have been through has changed for them?
Robin: When they do, it’s my favorite thing. I mean, they can talk about movies or they can talk about TV or books and podcasts and all the stuff I’ve done, but when they talk about recovery, all of a sudden we’re equal. It doesn’t matter who they are, where they’re from, all of a sudden we’re in a club. We are in the best club in the world. And I love being able to have that when people come, ‘Hey, I’m six months old!’ “Hey, I’m three weeks old!” ‘I am 10 years old!’ He makes my day.
