Heavy rains led to the crest of the dam, the agency said.
“Failure of the dam will result in potentially fatal flooding as well as extensive property damage in areas downstream of the dam,” according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
The evacuation also occurs at the same time as a flash flood warning.
“” The state stands ready to support Maui County as residents and visitors downstream of the Kaupakulua Dam evacuate at this time. Please stay out of the area until the danger has passed and continue to monitor local media for updates, ”Hawaii Governor David Ige said in a statement.
Maui County officials advise people near high-flow streams to evacuate or seek higher ground. Evacuation shelters are open at Paia Community Center and Hana High School.
All Maui County parks are closing for the remainder of the day due to heavy rains and flooding, the Department of Parks and Recreation said.
The parks will remain closed until further notice. The parks will be assessed for their reopening on Tuesday.
