Hastert settles child sexual abuse payment case

YORKVILLE, Ill. – Once the powerful former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Dennis Hastert and a man who accused him of child sexual abuse reached a tentative settlement out of court on Hastert’s refusal on Wednesday to pay $ 1.8 million in exchange for the man’s silence, lawyers for both men were saying.

Lawyers have not disclosed details of the settlement in the case, which was due to be tried next week in an Illinois court.

The man has only been named James Doe in court documents since the breach of contract lawsuit was filed in 2016. He said Hastert only paid him about half of the $ 3.5 million promised in secret money.
