‘Harry Potter’ reunion teaser drops, minus a very important guest – rt games & culture

HBO Max has released a teaser for its ‘Harry Potter’ 20th anniversary special, which features many of the cast from the production of the original film – but not the author of the books, JK Rowling herself.

The special retrospective reunion involves cast members who were involved in the launch of one of the world’s best-selling franchises. That, of course, includes the wizarding trio including Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, but the special will also see countless other actors who have appeared in all eight “Harry Potter” films, as well as the two spinoffs. The last list in the trailer actually lists the names of the actors that fans can expect to see in the special. However, JK Rowling is not mentioned anywhere.

Rowling had a passionate falling out with the transgender community, after making sex and gender statements. After saying that “people who have their period” should be called “women,” many felt that she had devalued the experiences of trans people. She received massive backlash for her opinion and was even doxxed. Many have since distanced themselves from her and her comments. Many of the “Harry Potter” cast members have even released statements disavowing Rowling’s position on the subject of sex. Lead star Daniel Radcliffe was the first to issue a rebuttal, and he was quickly followed by the rest of the Magic Trio, among others involved in film productions.

Neither Rowling herself nor the team behind the reunion have confirmed or denied that her absence had anything to do with her statements.

Since the initial backlash, the status of the writer’s relationship with the cast has not been clear. Despite Rowling’s comments being disowned, none of the main cast attacked the author outright, and even Radcliffe still seems to hold her in high regard, stating in a recent BBC interview. “He’s an immensely intelligent, funny and kind human being and I think that obviously comes through in his writing.”

However, judging by the latest trailer, it looks like the author’s presence was deemed to be more of a problem than it is worth. HBO Max has confirmed that she will not be making an appearance in the special reunion, but said archival footage of Rowling will be shown.

The anniversary special will premiere on New Years Day 2022 on the HBO Max streaming platform, ahead of the franchise’s third spin-off, “Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore.”
