Harry Maguire sends message on Manchester United future amid West Ham links

Despite a strong World Cup, the England international once again struggled for playing time under Erik ten Hag.

Summer signing Lisandro Martinez appears to be first choice alongside Raphael Varane, while Luke Shaw’s alliance at centre-back has given the United boss another option.

Maguire has started just eight games in all club competitions and has been linked with moves to Aston Villa and West Ham.

The 29-year-old said he was delighted to return to the starting line-up in the FA Cup win over Reading on Friday and insisted he would work to get back to his usual place in the line-up.

“I took care of myself and worked hard in training,” added Maguire.

“When I have the opportunity, I have to take it and make sure we win. It was nice to be there and I’m ready when the opportunity comes.

“I’m 29 and I haven’t really had this position in my career. It’s a position I don’t want to get used to but it’s an integral part of football.

“But I work hard every day and when the opportunity arises, I have to take it.”
