Harry Maguire: Gareth Southgate confirms England defender will be involved against Scotland | Football news

England defender Harry Maguire will be involved in the Euro 2020 group game against Scotland on Friday, manager Gareth Southgate said.

England were without Maguire for Sunday’s victory over Croatia due to the Manchester United defender still recovering from a sprained ankle suffered in May which kept him from playing for the remainder of the season.

But on Thursday Maguire declared himself fit and available for Friday’s Group D game at Wembley, and Southgate confirmed he will play a role in the game but is not decided whether he will start center-back.

“Harry will be involved tomorrow,” Southgate said at a press conference Thursday. “The decision we have to make is whether he’s ready to start, but we’re really happy with his progress.”

Gary Neville believes Harry Maguire’s first Euro match cannot be in a knockout, so they have to use it somehow in the next two group matches.

“He’s been training with the team for four or five days now and hasn’t had any reaction. Of course, with every session he’s involved in he becomes more confident. I think he’s on a very right way.

“Of course we want everyone to be available. It makes some tough decisions, but so far this morning on the training ground 26 players were training and it’s a great situation for us.”
