Harry Kane disappointed by questions over Gareth Southgate future as Stuart Pearce comes to England manager’s defense after Hungary thrashing

Harry Kane was ‘disappointed’ to answer questions about Gareth Southgate’s future as England manager after Hungary’s 4-0 thrashing.

The Three Lions suffered their worst home defeat since 1928 to a side 40 places below them in the FIFA World Rankings – and fans turned on Southgate.

Chants of ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ and ‘sacked in the morning’ rang out around Molineux as England failed to win for the fourth successive Nations League game.

The fan reaction left talkSPORT correspondent Faye Carruthers no choice but to ask Captain Kane about Southgate’s future – and the striker delivered a defiant response.

“That’s a really disappointing question to answer,” Kane told talkSPORT.

“If you look at where we were at Euro 2016 and where we are now, we’ve made huge progress and Gareth has been a big part of that.

“It’s disappointing. I understand it’s football. I understand the fans want answers. But he’s been England’s most successful manager for a long time.

“We are fully behind him. We have a process that we will stick to and we know it. We are not going to panic. »

Kane admitted it was a night to forget for England but insists they won’t overreact.

He added: “It’s a really disappointing night, there’s no beating around the bush. An evening to forget, certainly.

“It’s really disappointing when you’re in front of your local fans and want to try and put on a show and win.

“We will process it and watch it, but sometimes football throws these games out of the blue and we have to take it on the chin.

“There’s nothing to hide from it, but we’ll use it to prepare for another major tournament this year – and that will be the big picture.”

Meanwhile, England legend Stuart Pearce was among those backing Southgate after criticism from much of the Wolverhampton faithful.

Many were quick to point to Southgate’s prolonged success as England boss, taking the Three Lions to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and Euro 2020 final.

But Pearce insists that while the last four results don’t call for a change of direction, they certainly shouldn’t be dismissed.

He said: “It’s really tough to defend and I’m one of the most positive England supporters.

“I didn’t see this result coming. We as a team probably have to go out there and watch each other carefully.

“As it is, in this block of four games, our performances have been woefully below where we need to be.

“But changing managers? For me, it’s no. »
