Harness racing selections, Wednesday 6 April

Two meetings to watch on Wednesday, with my focus on Shepparton and Bathurst.

Shepparton

Best bet: race 8, number 1, classic shuffle
She’s a smart filly and if she can hold her own she simply wins. I just couldn’t muster the muzzle velocity to hold onto the lead and race form was against it in a second game at Cobram. Tested as a jet leading up to this debut, hence the SP at $1.20. Barring bad luck, she wins.

Next Best: Race 9, Number 3, Yankee Lover
Talented gelding who will win if he gets away from the boards cleanly. Picked up at Echuca and was beaten comfortably when third at Marengo Bay (FYI watch R9 Ballarat last Friday night and tell me something was wrong there). This form reads so well for a race like this.

Value: Race 4, Number 1, Fantasy Beach
His winning strike rate is nothing to sneeze at, but he ultimately offers a card to get in on the run and bounce back. He’s had little luck with gates lately but he’s coming with pole vault. He should bring the leaders back and take shots at odds.

Bathurst

Best bet: Race 4, Number 8, Under the shade
Drawn on the outside of the front row, but it’s got a bit on those. Ran a good time in his win at Menangle two before heading to Newcastle where he was exceptional from a wide gate to lead and ran them to shreds again in good time. It is progressive and can continue to win at this level.

Next Best: Race 2, Number 6, Bettor Keppel
He has to step in here, but confident he can do it successfully. Led everywhere and spanked them here last time, though the depth behind him was thin. It can be said about this field and despite the gap, if he finds the front he will be beaten again.

Value: Race 8, Number 9, Le Beau
It’s a race full of hard workers to close the meeting. This guy is indeed one of them but he gets a good trailing draw for being very late. Usually I find that with these kinds of races they overdo it up front and set it up for those who don’t have the pace. Here’s hoping that happens so he gets the final look.
