Halle Bailey is honored Charm United States, Mexico, Germany and Spain and simultaneously land roles in beloved classics, The little Mermaid And The Color Purple.

According to the 23-year-old who spoke to writer Leah Faye Cooper, she got the latter’s call while working “under the sea” as a Disney mermaid.

Bailey recalls recording her audition for a young Nettie – Celie’s younger sister – while filming The little Mermaid in London. An excited Bailey said she learned she had landed the role shortly after filming wrapped and marveled at the star-studded cast.

“I work with legends I’m such a fan of, like Fantasia and Taraji P. Henson.” Likening the setting to a family reunion, Bailey enjoyed the respite of having a smaller role than in The Little Mermaid.

“Plus, I was able to be country and speak in my southern Georgian accent, which was fun for me.” Bailey entered the project with understandable nerves—“the first one is so iconic, you almost don’t want to touch anything as precious as that, and it’s the same with Mermaid,” she says*—*but she’s happy with the result. “I think people will be really proud of the new version.”

Along with talking about the movie, which will hit theaters this Christmas, Bailey talked about her goal and emphasized that she strives to be a better human every day.

“Awards and accolades and compliments from people is great, but why (am I) here really? What am I doing to give it back to God? What am I actively doing to be a better person every day?

Not only that, but she also stressed the importance of keeping her personal life low-key, which must be difficult considering the public’s vested interest in her relationship with DDG. The actress recently compared him to her Prince Charming despite public perception.

“It’s really funny how people look at you (as) still that young girl, still that innocent, untouchable thing. I appreciate that as I venture into adulthood, I’m able to make my own decisions. For my peace and sanity, I must keep this private.
