Hafthor Bjornsson may be over 55kg lighter than in Game of Thrones days, but he still thinks he could “The Mountain” if he fought his character.
Thor is an extremely popular figure thanks to his exploits as a strongman, winning the World’s Strongest Man in 2018, and also for his role in the hit HBO series.
In his prime, the Icelandic athlete tipped the scales at around 205kg and his 6-foot-9 frame made him an imposing figure.
His Game of Thrones character, Gregor Clegane, was a much feared warrior and (spoiler alert) crushed Oberyn Martell’s head in one episode.
Since the series ended, Thor, who is an ambassador for Reign Total Body Fuel, has switched to boxing as he prepares to face off against Eddie Hall, his nemesis of the strongman.
That fight was scheduled to take place this weekend, but an injury forced his postponement and instead he will face arm wrestling Devon Larratt.
Thor’s body transformation has been remarkable and is much slimmer than before – now weighing around 150kg.
So who would win in a hypothetical fight between Thor the boxer and The Mountain from Game of Thrones?
“The person I am today would absolutely kick The Mountain’s ass,” Thor told talkSPORT.com.
“Much better form, and I would just use my reach and run over The Mountain in a minute.”
Thor admitted that the workouts were grueling to get in shape for boxing, but loves the feeling of pushing your body to the absolute limit.
He added: “It has been extremely difficult physically and mentally. Boxing is an outright sport. It is very difficult to get into good boxing form.
“Never, in a million years, would I have thought this sport was so difficult.
“I don’t know what it is, every workout, no matter how… you are in better shape. The more you throw, the more you move, so it’s always tough and no matter what good form you’re going to be in.
“Each session is basically a chore.
“I never thought ‘why am I doing this?’ I truly believe that I was put on this earth to become an athlete.
“I love being an athlete and I love to push myself.
“I just have a passion for punishing my body. It’s a little weird, but I like to push my body and see where I can take it.
” I can not complain. Yes, my body is sore and sometimes I have injuries, but that’s what I love to do and it keeps me going.
This fight with Eddie Hall will eventually take place and is expected to happen in March 2022.
