Hachette wielding suspect shot dead after charging officer in Illinois

An Illinois police officer fatally shot a man Thursday after the suspect arrived at a traffic stop involving another motorist and charged the officer with a hatchet, police said.

The fatal shooting happened in Naperville, about 33 miles west of Chicago, around 11:00 a.m., the Naperville Police Department (NPD) said in a news release. Police said preliminary information indicated that while a 22-year-old veteran of the police force was carrying out a traffic stop near McDowall Road and Bond Street, “an unrelated vehicle” arrived at the scene and drove off. parked next to the car that was stopped.

Caucasian suspect ‘quickly’ jumped out of vehicle ‘and charged at officer’ while brandishing an axe, NDP Leader Jason Arres said during a brief press conference. The officer, who was not injured in the incident, then shot the suspect who was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital, police said.

A still image from the body camera shared in the press release, seen below, shows the suspect with a hatchet in hand appearing to approach the officer. Authorities have yet to release the identity of the man, but the statement revealed he was in his 20s.

The NDP immediately alerted DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office and The Metropolitan DuPage County Emergency Response and Investigation Team (MERIT) to the shooting involving an officer and has launched a joint investigation into the matter, according to the release.

Police are investigating whether the deceased suspect was related to the person involved in the traffic stop, WLS reported. The outlet noted that a large police presence was seen near the scene in the early afternoon:

Squad cars, large police vehicles, a robot and officers in protective gear could be seen in the area near Route 59 and Diehl Road around 1 p.m. They removed several bags and suitcases from the suspect’s car, placing them on the ground to be X-rayed. .

Among the items recovered was an axe, although it is unclear if this was the hatchet he allegedly used to charge the officer, according to WLS.

The outlet also reports catching up with the suspect’s brother.

“We’re sorry to everyone involved,” he said.

The incident follows another fatal shooting involving an officer on a suspected hatchet-wielding suspect in February. Authorities say the sex offender has been convicted Aian Thomas Tracy, 32, struck the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Deputy in the neck with a hatchet. Thomas was then shot and killed and the deputy was rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
